‘Love at first sight,’ couple says of their $4.5 million Charlotte estate now for sale
It was love at first sight, Jeff and Geri Peters said of their 1925 Craftsman home on Queens Road West in Charlotte’s Myers Park neighborhood.
They lived in south Charlotte for many years and always hoped to buy a home in Myers Park someday, the couple told The Charlotte Observer on Saturday, a day after they put their beloved home on the market for $4.5 million.
“It was the wrap around front porch and the craftsman bungalow style that we fell in love with initially,” the couple said in a text as they waited to board a flight home from Austin, Texas.
“As we moved through the house, we realized the potential of the property and purchased it in May of 2013,” the couple said.
Stately neighborhood
Their 6,563-square-foot home at 1036 Queens Road West graces a far less traveled section of the road that generations of Charlotteans have cherished for its large trees, stately homes and wide sidewalks.
“Most of our traffic is people walking their pets or having a walk or jog through the neighborhood,” the couple said in their text.
They’ve loved walking to restaurants and Freedom Park, they said.
The couple are selling because the last of their six children will graduate from high school this year, and it’s “just a bit too much house for just the two of us,” they said.
For 25 years, the Peterses owned the Party City franchise for the Carolinas before selling it back to the corporation in 2017, Jeff Peters said.
They also own homes in Vermont and the Bahamas, the couple said.
Modern updates
With their Queens Road West home, Jeff and Geri Peters wanted to preserve the look and feel of a 1925 bungalow while expanding and updating it to enjoy modern conveniences, they said.
Most of the front half of the home is original, they said, while they completely renovated the great room, back porch, kitchen and master suite.
Andrew Roby was the general contractor on the renovations.
“Chris Maynard and his team worked tirelessly with us to pay attention to every detail, including the remediation of all the knob and tube electrical wiring in the entire home,” the couple said in their text.
The home has five bedrooms and four full and two partial bathrooms, according to its listing by Jeff Prescott and Cindy Ferguson of the South End/Dilworth Coldwell Banker Realty office.
The home features a main-level suite, a family room with a wet bar, billiards area and fireplace and an adjacent heated and covered terrace with a fireplace and outdoor kitchen, according to its listing.
Retractable glass doors open to a veranda that overlooks a saltwater pool, with a hot tub and an attached 6,000-gallon fresh-water koi pond.
“We configured the guest cottage to a full bedroom with full bath over the two car garage,” the Peterses said. “We added a natural stone pool with a large deck and spa. A real perk is the ability to be in the spa during the winter and watch TV or a movie on the outdoor projection TV with pull down screen.”
The pool “is tucked away” in the back of the property so the guest cottage has privacy from the main home, they said.
Backyard weddings
Jeff and Geri Peters bought the home from a family who’d lived there for at least 30 years and who held at least one wedding in the large backyard, they said.
“One of our children was married there as well,” the Peterses said.
The couple said they started a Charlotte-based luxury home management company called Curate Home Management after realizing a home the size of theirs “required a lot of attention.”
“The buyer of our home will have the opportunity to have all of their information at their fingertips should they decide to go with Curate Home Management,” they said. “We started the company so, of course, every detail of this home is already in place!” they texted.
