Fishing is a popular activity for those looking to relax during the warmer months.

In North Carolina, most anglers are required to have a license to fish. If you’re caught fishing without one, you could face a hefty fine.

Here’s what you need to know if you’re planning to fish in the state this year.

Who is required to have a fishing license?

Anyone in North Carolina over the age of 16 is required to have a license to fish on public waters, including lakes, rivers and ponds.

The only day you can fish without a license is on the Fourth of July, the state’s annual free fishing day.

Where can I purchase a license?

Fishing licenses can be purchased online at ncwildlife.org, or by phone at 888-248-6834.

You can also buy a fishing license at select wildlife service agents in Mecklenburg County.

How much does it cost?

In North Carolina, there are three types of fishing licenses available: short-term, annual and lifetime.

The cost can vary depending on where you want to fish. Licenses for inland fishing, or fishing in lakes, rivers and game lands within the state are more expensive than permits to fish in coastal waters. However, North Carolina fishing licenses are cheaper for those who live in the state.

The fees for fishing licenses can be found here.

What is the penalty for fishing without a license?

If you fish without a license, you could be charged with a misdemeanor and fined anywhere between $35 to $500. You could also face up to a 30-day prison sentence.
