I-85, I-77 exit ramps in Charlotte will stay closed for weeks. Here’s what we know.
State highway contractor crews closed two ramps from Interstates 85 and 77 in Charlotte late Friday as part of a $15.3 million project to improve seven miles of I-85 between exits 36 and 42.
Drivers must tolerate detours until 6 a.m. Monday, April 11, according to a state DOT news release.
At 9 p.m. Friday, crews closed the exit ramps to Statesville Avenue from I-77 North — exit 13A — and from I-85 North — exit 39.
The state closed the ramps so workers can safely remove and rebuild the concrete surface on the ramps, officials said.
Detours posted by the state are now in effect:
Drivers on I-77 North/South take exit 12 — Lasalle Street — to access Statesville Avenue.
I-85 North drivers are being detoured onto exit 38 — I-77. The detour leads them south to Lasalle Street exit 12 before returning drivers to Statesville Avenue.
“Drivers exiting from I-77 will be able to continue to I-85,” DOT officials said in the news release. “Only the Statesville Avenue ramps are affected by these closures.”
When possible, alerts about the ramp closures will be displayed on nearby overhead message boards, officials said. That’s in addition to the contractor’s portable message signs now in place, according to DOT.
