A vehicle collided with a deer on the John Belk Freeway in uptown Charlotte, snarling Friday afternoon traffic.

The deer was dashing across Interstate 277 when it was hit near the South Tryon Street overpass, according to a Charlotte Observer photographer caught in the backup.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers removed the carcass just after 3 p.m.

The N.C. Department of Transportation reported the incident on Twitter as a disabled vehicle call. NCDOT officials confirmed the incident had been cleared about 3:10 p.m.

It wasn’t immediately known if anyone in the vehicle was hurt.
