Charlotte NAACP calls Thursday forum on church fires
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg chapter of the NAACP will host a community conversation about church fires at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Little Rock AME Zion Church, 401 N. McDowell St.
The session follows last week’s fire that severely damaged Briar Creek Road Baptist Church in Charlotte. Charlotte fire officials say it was arson, and the FBI is investigating to see if there are any signs of a hate crime or other federal violations.
The pastors and most members are African American, and they share a campus with churches serving immigrants.
The Southern Poverty Law Center found six predominantly African-American churches in Georgia, Tennessee, South Carolina, Florida and North Carolina with reported fires in the past week, three of which are being investigated as arson.
