Procrastinators beware: Tax and voter registration deadlines are here

Editor’s note: This story was corrected to indicate April 18 is the deadline to request an extension for filing your taxes.

If you’re a procrastinator, this week is probably going to be a big one for you. A couple of significant deadlines are coming up that you’ll need to pay close attention to.

First, Tax Day, (traditionally on April 15) has been moved to Monday, April 18, this year. The Charlotte Observer’s Mary Ramsey had the story this week about why you have a few extra days (it has nothing to do with COVID, for once), and some tips for what you should do if you need to file for an extension.

You’ll have until Oct. 17 to file your taxes if you have an extension request approved — but you do have to file for that extension on or before April 18 this year.

The other big deadline comes Friday. That’s the last day you can register to vote in North Carolina’s May 17 primary election.

That election will have some important races on it, including U.S. Senator, U.S. House of Representatives, Charlotte City Council and Mecklenburg County Commissioners.

But if you’re among those who really likes to wait until the very last moment — and don’t mind not voting on the actual Election Day — you’ll still have another opportunity to vote if you miss the Friday registration deadline.

Early voting, which begins April 28 and lasts until May 14, offers one-stop, same-day registration and voting. More information on that can be found at www.ncsbe.gov/voting/vote-early-person.

For more in-depth primary election coverage — as well as a Q&As with all the candidates in all the races — make sure to check out our April 24 voter’s guide.

SouthPark’s skyscraper?

A Charlotte City Council zoning meeting Monday evening could decide the fate of a proposed 10-store mixed-use office tower in SouthPark.

The Observer’s Gordon Rago wrote that developer Lincoln Harris has filed a rezoning petition to replace the Regal movie theater at Phillips Place Shopping Center. If approved, the building on a roughly 4-acre site would be the tallest building in the area. Some neighbors have voiced opposition to the building’s height.

“(SouthPark) is not a skyscraper area,” Robert Aulebach, vice president of the SouthPark Association of Neighborhoods, said at a city council meeting last month. The nonprofit was established in 2017 and advocates for the majority of homeowner and condo associations.

The building would surpass the roughly 190-foot Capitol Towers about a mile away. Lincoln Harris also developed that project, which includes 472,500 square feet of office and about 6,000 square feet of retail across two 10-story towers.

The return of stadium concerts

Last week saw big-name acts like Bon Jovi and John Mayer filling Charlotte’s Spectrum Center. This week, the concert venue is getting even bigger.

Billy Joel is scheduled to finally play his long-awaited Bank of America Stadium concert Saturday, April 23.

Joel’s concert originally was announced in 2019 and scheduled for April 2020. ... And then it was pushed back to April 2021. ... And now, at last, it’s happening.

As the Observer’s Théoden Janes wrote in a concert preview last month, “At 72, Joel is still cranking out 2-1/2-hour greatest-hits-style shows with as robust a voice, with as nimble-fingered piano-playing, and with as engaging a personality as ever.”

Check out the Observer next weekend for Janes’ review of the concert.
