Thunderstorms likely in Charlotte region Thursday

Thunderstorms are likely in the Charlotte region after noon Thursday, according to the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg, S.C.

The chance of showers and thunderstorms stands at 60 percent both Thursday and Friday and 40 percent on Independence Day.

A broad upper-level trough will remain over the Southeast through the weekend, steering a series of weak low pressure systems over the region, according to the weather service.

Those systems will increase rain and thunderstorm chances each afternoon and evening.

Highs will be more than 10 degrees below what the Charlotte area put up with over the past couple of weeks when the mercury consistently reached the high 90s and even 100.

Thursday and Friday’s highs are forecast at a more seasonable 87, with Saturday, Sunday and Monday reaching an expected 89. Those highs are normal for early July, according to the weather service.
