April 20, commonly referred to as “4/20,” is a day celebrated by marijuana enthusiasts around the world.
Though the substance remains illegal at the federal level, 18 states have legalized marijuana for medical or recreational use – but North Carolina is not one of them.
According to state law, possession of up to a half-ounce of marijuana is a misdemeanor, punishable by up to 45 days in jail and a $200 fine.
A bill introduced in the state Senate last year would allow patients who have debilitating medical conditions like cancer, post-traumatic stress disorder, epilepsy and sickle cell anemia to use marijuana, but it remains in the Rules and Operations of the Senate Standing Committee, the News & Observer reported.
