Want to beat the Charlotte heat? Here are 10 signs your AC may need repairs first

Summer will officially be here soon but with temperatures having already exceeded 90 degrees recently, it’s time to start thinking about how your air conditioning system will hold up, a Charlotte-area service technician says.

There are many signs that your air conditioner may not be functioning properly, according to Brian Pysz, owner of Peace Heating and Air Conditioning, a Mooresville-based HVAC repair company.

In a blog post, Pysz said recognizing problems with your air conditioning unit early –- instead of waiting until the issue worsens –- can save you money in the long run.

If you want to ensure your AC unit runs smoothly this summer, here’s what you need to know.

What are some signs that your air conditioner needs servicing?

If you notice any of the following signs in your air conditioner, Pysz says, you should contact an HVAC technician to examine it:

  • Strange noises coming from your air conditioner: All AC units make some kind of noise, but rattling, banging, pinging or gurgling is not normal.

  • Musty or damp smells coming from your unit: Bad smells could indicate that your unit needs cleaning, or that you have ice in your AC system.

  • Poor air quality in your house: If you notice someone in your house struggling with allergies more than usual, it could be a sign your AC is having trouble filtering out contaminants.

  • Ice on your unit: Ice could lead to standing water within your unit, which could cause additional problems.

  • Circuit breakers popping frequently: If your AC runs too often, it can stress your home’s electrical system, and cause shock or fire.

  • Noticing higher temperatures in your house: If you notice your house is hot while running your AC, it could be a sign that your unit isn’t working properly.

  • Broken thermostat: If your thermostat isn’t working, your AC is most likely the culprit.

  • Cycling too fast: If your HVAC system cycles on and off too fast, your compressor motor, fan belt and other components could break under strain.

  • Poor airflow: If there is leakage in your AC, it could cause poor airflow in your home.

  • Your HVAC system breaks: If you don’t hear any sounds coming from your AC when you adjust your thermostat, it may not be working at all.

How to prepare your Charlotte home for the summer heat

According to safeelectricity.org, summer can generate some of the highest electricity bills of the year due to the high demand for air conditioning. Here are some tips to make your home more energy efficient during the warmer months:

  • Update your insulation to keep cool air in and hot air out of your home.

  • Use a programmable thermostat and leave it at a higher temperature when you’re not home.

  • Install awnings over windows exposed to direct sunlight.

  • Install ceiling fans.

  • Avoid unnecessary trips in and out of your house since heat and humidity come in each time you open the door.

  • Close your blinds during the hottest part of the day to keep the sun out.

  • Use an air conditioner with an Energy Star label.
