Sneak peak inside Mecklenburg County’s new Cornelius recreation center opening this month
Northern Mecklenburg County residents have a new place to work out, swim and attend summer camp this month.
The $40 million, 85,000-square foot Northern Regional Recreation Center at 18121 Old Statesville Road in Cornelius opens to the public on June 24 at noon following a ribbon cutting.
The center’s operating hours are:
Monday – Thursday, 5:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.
Friday, 5:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Saturday, 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Sunday, 1 to 6:30 p.m.
Summer camp opportunities at the center begin Tuesday, June 21 and include sports camp, splash camp, STEM camp, “sun-sational” crafts and traditional summer camp. Those interested can sign up on the Park and Recreation website.
The center’s regional manager Justin Jackson said he’s committed to fulfilling the needs of the northern Mecklenburg community — from teaching just one person how to swim to moving a fitness class to the gym to accommodate more folks.
“This is not our center,” Jackson said. “This is your center and will be treated as such.”
