Chunk of Charlotte parking deck collapses under concrete mixer truck, video shows
The top floor of a Charlotte parking deck partially collapsed under a concrete mixing truck on Wednesday afternoon, the Charlotte Fire Department said.
The truck, carrying a load of dry mix concrete, “caused partial failure to the top parking deck” in the 500 block of East Morehead Street, fire officials said on Twitter just after 1:15 p.m.
“Right now, we have 110,000 pounds from the truck, so that is adding to the weight of the parking deck along with the other vehicles,” fire Capt. Jackie Gilmore told reporters at the scene, according to Charlotte Observer news partner WSOC.
Google Maps shows the deck is located behind the Morehead Place building in the Dilworth area just outside uptown.
No injuries were reported, according to the fire department.
The truck was not moving when the incident happened, Gilmore said, according to WSOC.
The truck appeared to be owned by Concrete Supply Co. The company did not immediately respond to a phone call from a Charlotte Observer reporter.
Firefighters used several pneumatic struts on the lower deck to hold the weight under the truck, fire officials said in a tweet at 2:36 p.m. Each strut can support up to 80,000 pounds, officials said.
Concrete was removed to decrease the weight of the truck, which was removed from the deck, fire officials said in a tweet at 4 p.m.
The parking deck will remain closed until its safety and stability are determined by structural engineers, the fire department said.
