A Charlotte-area man has been identified as the person killed in a skydive incident in South Carolina, officials said.

Andrew Kelly Rawls, 35, of Waxhaw, N.C., died Saturday after a hard landing at Skydive Carolina In Chester County, said Terry Tinker, Chester County Coroner.

Waxhaw is in Union County, N.C., southeast of Charlotte.

Rawls died from blunt force trauma, Tinker said.

The cause of the hard landing remains under investigation by the coroner’s office and other officials.

The Chester County Sheriff’s Office, North Chester Fire Department, and Chester County EMS responded to the incident.

Skydive Carolina told media outlets in a released statement after the fatality Rawls, who was alone, was an experienced skydiver with more than 1,000 jumps.

Rawls’ parachute had opened before the hard landing, the statement said.

Skydive Carolina, in northwestern Chester County close to the York County line, has been open since 1986.
