CMPD: Motorcycle was speeding before fatal crash in Ballantyne
A 22-year-old Charlotte man died after his motorcycle hit another vehicle at an intersection in the Ballantyne area Thursday evening, police said.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police said in a news release the motorcycle driver was speeding. The wreck occurred just before 6:30 p.m., on Ballantyne Commons Parkway.
Police identified Bradley Gaupp as the driver who died.
A 2020 Nissan Pathfinder was making a left turn from John J. Delaney Drive onto westbound Ballantyne Commons Parkway. The SUV driver slowed at the median to let westbound traffic turn when Gaupp’s motorcycle struck the front driver’s side of the Pathfinder, police said.
The impact caused Gaupp to be ejected from the motorcycle, CMPD said. He was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. Police found Gaupp with serious injuries before he died, CMPD said. The SUV driver is not facing charges and was not impaired or speeding, according to the news release sent Friday.
Toxicology results are pending for Gaupp.
