Deputy dies after being found unresponsive at NC elementary school, sheriff says

An Iredell County sheriff’s deputy died at a hospital Friday after having a medical emergency at a Statesville elementary school, officials said.

Marty Joe Lewis was on duty as the school resource officer at Scotts Elementary School when he was found unresponsive, the sheriff’s office said. School officials called 911.

School staff, firefighters and paramedics performed CPR on Lewis, but he was pronounced dead at a hospital on Friday, according to the sheriff’s office.

Lewis was a 20-year veteran of the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office.

“Deputy Lewis was dedicated to, and loved working with the staff and students at Scotts Elementary School,” the sheriff’s office said.

No funeral arrangements have been announced at this time.
