The woman who has hit by and pinned under a large motorcoach bus in uptown Charlotte on Sunday has died from her injuries, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police said Monday.

Destiny Vazquez, 19, “was in the crosswalk and had the right of way while crossing,” according to a CMPD statement. It happened on West 4th Street, near the 200 block of S. Cedar Street about 7 p.m. She was struck by a bus attempting to turn onto W. 4th Street.

The bus, a 2013 Van Hool Commuter Coach, “proceeded into the intersection after having a green light,” police said.

Vazquez was pinned under the bus after being hit and had to be extracted by the Charlotte Fire Department, CMPD said, and was taken to a hospital, where she later died from her injuries.

Bus driver Dominique Massey, who was the only one on the bus at the time of the incident, has been “charged with Failure to Yield the Right of Way and Misdemeanor Death by Motor Vehicle,” according to police.

“Speed and impairment do not appear to be factors for Ms. Massey and toxicology results are pending for the victim in this case,” CMPD said in a statement.

Anyone with additional information is asked to call CMPD at 704-432-2169, extension 5 or contact Crime Stoppers by calling 704-334-1600 or visiting charlottecrimestoppers.com.
