Police on Thursday arrested a CATS bus passenger accused of firing a bullet back at the bus he just exited, injuring a fellow passenger.

The shooter, identified as 34-year-old Scott Randolph Mayfield, pulled out a pistol and fired the round after leaving the bus around 11 p.m. Monday, CMPD said on Twitter.

Mayfield hopped off at the intersection of Ellington Street and Billingsley Road — between the Grier Heights and Cotswold neighborhoods in southeast Charlotte.

The bus driver reported the shooting to police, according to CMPD.

Police said the bullet hit the side of the bus, its impact bruising a passenger’s shoulder. The bullet didn’t hit the passenger, CMPD said.

Officers arrested Mayfield on charges of shooting into occupied property, possession of a firearm by a felon and damage to property.

Police haven’t said if they know why the shot was fired or how many passengers were on the bus at the time.
