New 2-mile greenway in the works in Charlotte. Here are the details.

Construction is expected to start next year on another stretch of greenway in Charlotte, located in the area of Nevin and Derita neighborhoods.

The new two-mile greenway — dubbed the “Irwin Creek Greenway” — will be “bookended by Nevin Park at Statesville Road and Allen Hills Park at Cheviot Road,” according to Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation. It’s expected to back up to the RibbonWalk Nature Preserve.

“On a larger scale, this greenway will be part of the Carolina Thread Trail and The Seam, a contiguous regional north-south trail, that will span 50 miles connecting from Statesville, NC to the South Carolina state line,” the parks department says.

Plans call for construction of the greenway to begin in spring 2023 and be completed by late 2024.

There will be a virtual public meeting about the project at 6 p.m. Nov. 17. To register, visit publicinput.com/irwincreek1. You can also take a survey about the project.

Public art proposal

The Arts & Science Council is taking applications from local artists interested in creating art for the greenway.

“The selected artist will have the opportunity to create freestanding artwork” that will be placed “between the vehicular roadway and the greenway trail,” the group says.

“Professional artists residing in North Carolina and South Carolina” can apply at asc.slideroom.com. The deadline is June 14.
