A Charlotte Popeyes received a “B” grade during a recent inspection by the Mecklenburg County Health Department for multiple violations, including the presence of insects and improper storage of food.

The Popeyes at 3318 Wilkinson Blvd. received a score of 88 during an inspection on Nov. 12.

Health department inspectors cited the restaurant after “several flying insects” were found in a dry storage area, documents show. The report did not specify the insect breed.

The restaurant was also dinged for storing chicken above the 41-degree maximum and improper handwashing procedures after an employee was observed “touching his nose and not washing his hands before handling food,” documents show.

This was the restaurant’s first “B” grade. The Charlotte Observer contacted the restaurant for a response to the inspection report.

According to state law, permits are immediately revoked if a restaurant receives a score of less than 70 percent.
