1 killed in wreck on Interstate 77 in Charlotte early Saturday, fire department reports

One person has died in a wreck on Interstate 77 in Charlotte early Saturday, the Charlotte Fire Department reported.

The wreck closed the northbound lanes just south of the Sunset Road exit, fire officials said on Twitter at 3:40 a.m.

The lanes opened three hours later, according to the N.C. Department of Transportation.

Firefighters warned drivers after the wreck to expect “significant delays” and urged them to find another route.

The State Highway Patrol released no information about the wreck later Saturday.

This is a developing story.
