Plane with 2 people aboard crashes in Winston-Salem Saturday, FAA says
A plane with two people aboard crashed in Winston-Salem Saturday, the Federal Aviation Administration reported.
The twin-engine Piper PA-30 crashed around 11:15 a.m., according to an FAA news release.
The pilot and passenger died after crashing in the backyard of a home near New Walkertown Road, WXII reported, citing authorities.
The plane departed St. Louis Downtown Airport at 6:27 a.m. Saturday, the Winston-Salem Journal reported, citing the flight recording app Flightradar 24. The airport is located in Cahokia Heights, Illinois.
Flightradar 24 reported the plane making a loop around the airport in London, Kentucky, at 10:04 a.m., according to the newspaper.
The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the crash, according to the FAA news release.
The NTSB will lead the investigation and provide updates, FAA officials said in the release.
Neither agency identified the people aboard the plane, FAA officials said.
After investigators verify the aircraft registration number at the scene, the FAA says the agency typically releases the number the next business day on its Aviation Safety Information website.
