‘Stray’ boa constrictor found roaming an NC hotel. Here’s what happened to it

A “stray” brown boa constrictor found curled up in a local hotel appeared all lovey dovey in the hands and arms of Iredell County Animal Services workers.

“He’s a cutie!!” a woman said on Facebook after Iredell County Animal Services posted pictures of this ball python on Friday, Dec. 2, 2022.

The slithery serpent was so affectionate they even named it — Ekans, which is snake spelled backwards.

“Although we are unsure of gender and age, we are sure of the lounging skills Ekans possesses!” Animal Services workers posted on Facebook with photos of the snake in a worker’s arms.

“Ekans is ready for adoption to the forever family who is well versed in both reptile care and handling,” according to the Facebook post. “Seems to have been handled and well cared for before finding the way to us as a stray!”

Soon after Animal Services posted on Nov. 18 that the snake was available, it was adopted..

Some love ’em, others not so much

Some on social media reacted in horror to the photos. Some on social media swore the snake was a ball python, but Animal Services confirmed on Facebook and to The Charlotte Observer that the snake was a boa constrictor.

Ball pythons are popular pets among the serpent-loving crowd, according to Healthline.com. “They are fairly docile, but may bite you for one reason or another,” the site reports.

“Keep him away from the kittens please,” a woman wrote on the site.

“That’s a big fat Hell NO for me,” another woman said. “That is not a pet.”

But virtually all others who replied to the post admired the snake.

“He’s a cutie!!” a woman posted.

“I want him,” another woman said.

The snake was found at Best Western Statesville Inn and was adopted within about 50 minutes of Animal Services posting about the serpent.

Boas are nonvenomous and can grow to 13 feet in length, according to National Geographic. They can weigh at least 100 pounds, and their jaws open so wide they swallow “birds, monkeys and wild pigs” whole, the magazine reports.
