Police reveal new details in fatal collision between a CMS bus and a motorcycle
A motorcyclist whodied in a wreck with a CMS bus Thursday morning was speeding and ran a red light, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police said Friday.
No students were aboard the bus that collided with the motorcycle at the intersection of South Tryon Street, Shopton Road West and Youngblood Road in southwest Charlotte just before 5:30 a.m., police said.
The motorcyclist, 35-year-old Marvin Rushing Jr., was pronounced dead at the scene.
The bus driver, 43-year-old Natalie Aikens,wasn’t hurt, police said.
Aikens was turning left from South Tryon Street onto Youngblood Road when Rushing hit the bus while northbound on South Tryon Street, according to the preliminary CMPD investigation. Rushing wasn’t wearing a Department of Transportation-approved helmet, police said.
Police directed inbound drivers from South Carolina back toward Interstate 77. Outbound drivers on York Road were detoured onto Shopton Road West, police said on Twitter.
Drivers were urged to avoid the area, as police said they expected “major delays” in both directions.
