Martin Luther King Jr. Day is the only federal holiday recognized as a National Day of Service, encouraging all people to donate time to volunteer.

In Charlotte, there are many service opportunities the public can participate in to honor the late civil rights icon.

From places of worship to non-profit organizations, these are available chances to give back in the Queen City.

United Way of Central Carolinas

United Way is hosting MLK Call to Service, where volunteers will help assemble snack packs for students who attend tutoring and after-school programs sponsored by the organization.

The event will be held at Northside Baptist Church, 333 Jeremiah Blvd., on Jan. 14 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

Samaritan House

The organization has many volunteer opportunities, including yard work, landscaping, housekeeping, laundry and meal preparation.

Those interested in getting involved can fill out an online volunteer application. Someone from the organization will contact you once it is completed.

The Relatives

The Relatives, a youth group home in Charlotte, is hosting an event where volunteers will cook lunch for the residents and staff. Volunteers can also help residents with resume writing and job interview skills.

The event will be at 2219 Freedom Dr. on Jan. 16 from 11 a.m.-2 p.m.

Learning Help Centers of Charlotte

Learning Help Centers of Charlotte, an organization that provides educational, spiritual and social support for immigrant families, is hosting a volunteer event on MLK Day to benefit the children they serve.

Volunteers will be in charge of organizing books according to assigned grade levels, arranging reading and math materials for tutors at the center, and writing notes of encouragement for kids in the program.

The event will be on Jan. 16 from 9 a.m.-noon at St. Andrews United Methodist Church, 1901 Archdale Dr. Participants must be at least 18 years old to volunteer.

Crisis Assistance Ministry

Volunteers at Crisis Assistance Ministry, an organization that provides assistance to people who are struggling financially, help in a variety of roles, such as sorting and inspecting donated items and hanging clothing.

All volunteers must be at least 11 years old, and are required to show proof they are fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

Crisis Assistance Ministry is located at 500-A Spratt St. To register for a volunteer spot this weekend, visit volunteer.crisisassistance.org.
