Construction will close I-485 inner loop lanes overnight in south Charlotte

Overnight highway lane closures are expected next week as crews perform bridge work associated with new express lanes on part of Interstate 485 in south Charlotte.

North Carolina Department of Transportation contract crews will set bridge girders on I-485 at the Johnston Road interchange, officials said in a news release Wednesday.

All lanes on the inner loop near the area will close for the nightly work, starting around midnight Monday, April 17, and will be open each day starting at 5 a.m.

Traffic will be detoured starting at Johnston Road, re-routing drivers via N.C. Hwy. 51 (Pineville-Matthews Road) to rejoin I-485, past the work area.

Weather permitting, NCDOT officials say, the work will take four nights.

“These activities are part of the I-485 express lanes project underway to add an express lane and deliver additional corridor improvements along Interstate 485 between I-77 and U.S. 74 (Independence Boulevard),” the release stated. “The same process will happen on the outer loop at a later date.”

The I-485 Express Lanes project includes replacing the current two-lane Ballantyne Commons Parkway bridge with a new four-lane bridge.
