Rider hurt, horse killed on NC road; driver to face charges, police say

A driver faces felony hit-and-run and other charges after a horse was killed and its rider was hurt along a Huntersville road Wednesday night, Police Capt. Brian Vaughan said.

The driver left the scene and later reported the crash to police, Vaughan said. Officers interviewed the driver and expected to file formal charges Thursday night, he said.

The driver hit one of two men riding horses about 9 p.m. on Mount Holly-Huntersville Road, near Wedgewod Drive, according to the captain. The second rider and horse weren’t hurt, he said.

The felony charge in this case would apply to leaving the scene of a wreck where a person was reported hurt, Vaughn said. The rider’s injuries were minor, and he wasn’t taken to hospital, Vaughan said.
