Woman who crashed into a boulder in the NC mountains has died, Highway Patrol says

A woman who crashed into a boulder and landed in a creek off U.S. 421 in Boone Monday has died, a North Carolina Highway Patrol trooper said Saturday.

The driver, 52-year-old Elk Park resident Dena Lawrence Comer, was hospitalized in critical condition after the wreck near Ward Greene Road about 1:20 a.m., Master Trooper Christopher Casey said in a news release.

She died in the hospital Thursday, he said.

Comer’s car overturned after she hit the boulder off the right side of U.S. 421, Casey said.

Impairment contributed to the crash, the trooper said.
