Sinkhole shuts down part of Northlake Mall Drive ahead of rush-hour, CMPD says

Part of Northlake Mall Drive closed due to a sinkhole, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department announced just ahead of rush-hour traffic on Wednesday.

The closure began near the Firestone Auto Care Center near Northlake Mall and next door to Red Robin. Drivers are asked to avoid the area, CMPD said in an alert at 4:15 p.m.

Photos from the scene show the sinkhole to be about a yard in each direction in the middle of one of the road’s lanes. Officials placed orange cones around the area, and the pavement is cracking in each direction away from the initial hole.

No other information has been released by the department.
