Her car broke down in a NC toll lane. Impaired driver crashed, killing her.

A Wilkesboro man is facing charges after a crash killed a woman whose car had broken down on Interstate 77’s toll lanes Tuesday night.

Misty Leigh Shook, 47, was in the northbound lanes near Exit 33 in Mooresville with her broken down 2016 Toyota Scion, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. It’s unclear if she was inside the car at the time of the collision with a Ford F-150.

Shook died at the scene, and the truck’s driver, Bret Shove, 48, was charged with driving while impaired, failure to reduce speed, and other traffic violations, Highway Patrol officials said Wednesday.

Paramedics took him to Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center in critical condition with non-life-threatening injuries. A nearby 2014 Ford Escape was struck by Shove’s truck as it spun out. Those passengers were not injured.

I-77 was closed in the area for approximately 4 hours during the on-scene investigation.
