The NoDa Neighborhood and Business Association is hosting a memorial bike ride and mural unveiling to honor a young photographer who was killed earlier this year.

Kristie Nicole Crowder, 30, was hit by a car while riding a bike in Plaza Midwood on Jan. 5. She died in the hospital the next day.

On social media, Crowder’s father said she died on his birthday.

“If you know our family, you know I have a special bond with my girls. So even in death Kristie wanted that bond to continue. Henceforth we will continue to celebrate January 6, as my earthly birthday and her heavenly birthday,” Buddy Crowder wrote on Facebook.

Crowder said on a website for her photography business she was a Morganton native and UNC Charlotte alumnus. She worked as a capital markets analyst, she wrote, but her “passion” was taking photos.

“I am not your typical photographer. It was years before I decided I wanted to capture your beautiful face; but in December 2018 I received my first camera and after that, I was hooked,” Crowder’s website reads. “I carried my first camera to 6 different countries and then decided one year later to transition my hobby to my side hustle.”

The bike ride and mural unveiling will be held on Aug. 11, starting at 6:45 p.m. Those who wish to participate in the bike ride must register online before meeting at The Exchange on 36th, located at 451 East 36th St.

The mural at The Exchange will be unveiled at 7:30 p.m. For any questions, email the NoDa Neighborhood and Business Association at board@noda.org.
