The state of North Carolina employs some 70,000 people, ranging from administrative assistants and correctional officers to chemists and archaeologists.

The N.C. Department of Health and Human Services and the Adult Corrections department employ the most full-time, permanent workers at more than 12,000 each. The N.C. Department of Transportation employs more than 8,000 people, data show.
