A natural gas explosion caused a Mooresville home to collapse and kill an NFL player’s father, authorities confirmed Tuesday morning. But officials have not determined what exactly led up to the accident.

The fatal explosion happened Aug. 21, after a report of a gas odor around midnight. Robert M. Farley, 61, died as a result of the explosion, which officials have said previously they believe was accidental. Another man in the home at the time survived.

The Mooresville home on Lake Norman was owned by Tennessee Titans cornerback Caleb Farley, whose father was killed. His insurance company will continue any remaining investigations into what exactly triggered the explosion, Iredell County Emergency Management director Kent Greene said.

“Further investigation into the cause and origin cannot be continued due to the instability of the remaining structure,” Greene wrote in a statement.”

As the Observer reported previously, the 6,000-square-foot house was leveled, and several cars were also lost.

The Iredell County Fire Marshal’s Office, along with the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms, joined the investigation.

This is a developing story. Check back for more details.
