Car sped away after Charlotte woman shot, found ‘laying on the ground’ near home

A mother was fatally shot in Charlotte Saturday morning, police said.

Just before 6 a.m., Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police officers found Dianne Sturdivant Davis, 64, with a gunshot wound after responding to a report of a shooting in the 200 block of Orchard Trace Lane, according to a CMPD news release.

At least three people called 911, according to emergency dispatch radio obtained via Broadcastify. The first caller heard gunshots after a car alarm sounded, the dispatcher said.

There’s “someone laying on the ground,” officers were told. The caller then saw a gray SUV “leaving fast.”

Davis died at the scene, police said.

“...She has three children, three boys,” the victim’s sister told WSOC, The Charlotte Observer’s news partner. “You took their mother from them, and right now those babies are hurting. They are grown; yes, they are adults, but they are hurting; they are totally lost without their mom.”

Orchard Trace Lane is off North Tryon Street between University City and Hidden Valley.

Police haven’t said if they have anyone in custody. Police also haven’t said if they know what prompted the shooting.

Police urged anyone with information about the shooting to call CMPD Detective Brad Tisdale at 704-432-8477 or the Crime Stoppers anonymous tips line at 704-334-1600.
