Police Tuesday identified the suspect who prompted officers to evacuate uptown Charlotte’s transit center this weekend after authorities found what they believed was an explosive device.

Troughs of people waiting for kickoff at the Duke’s Mayo Bowl filled the city while officers apprehended Jayden Henderson, 19, at about 6 p.m. Saturday, according to a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department news release.

Police first identified Henderson as an armed suspect in the 200 block of East Fourth Street. Officers found him with a gun, knives and what they believed was a bomb in his backpack.

CMPD’s Bomb Squad Unit determined the package safe after multiple firefighters, paramedics and K-9 units responded to the area.

Henderson was charged with assault on a government official, carrying a concealed weapon and resisting an officer, according to the news release.

The investigation is ongoing, police said, and anyone with information can call 704-334-1600 or visit http://charlottecrimestoppers.com/ to leave an anonymous tip.
