Large fight at Charlotte high school football game ‘an embarrassment,’ principal says
Police cleared the stands of spectators after a “large fight” broke out during a football game at Harding University High School Friday night, a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools spokeswoman said Saturday.
One minor injury was reported, spokeswoman Susan Vernon-Devlin told The Charlotte Observer.
The fight involved multiple adults and students, principal Glenn Starnes said. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police arrested two people who were not students, he said.
The homecoming game against North Mecklenburg High continued after the stands were cleared, Vernon-Devlin said.
“Police were on site for the duration of the game and through the clearing of parking lots,” Vernon-Devlin said in an email. No other incidents occurred, she said.
Starnes said he expects better of those involved. “What I witnessed last night was an embarrassment to our community and does not align to the values of excellence held at our school,” Starnes said in an email to the Observer.
“We must maintain our focus on student achievement and providing a safe and welcoming environment,” he said. “This can only be done with the support of families and the community..”
It was unknown Saturday what prompted the fight and how many people were involved. A police incident report was not immediately available Saturday.
