A motorcyclist died Saturday after veering off a Charlotte-area highway and smacking into cable guide wires in the median, according to the North Carolina Highway Patrol.

The rider was southbound on U.S. 321 near N.C. 10 in Catawba County when the bike went off the left side of the road about 10 a.m., Trooper Christopher Casey said in a news release.

It’s unclear why the rider veered off the highway, Casey said. Speed and alcohol have been ruled out as factors, he said.

The Highway Patrol will release the rider’s name when troopers complete their investigation, Casey said.

Both sides of U.S. 321 were partially closed for two hours as troopers investigated, he said.
