The city of Charlotte employs more than 8,300 people — from attorneys and police officers to engineers and firefighters.

More than 1,700 of them earn at least $100,000 and 40 make more than $200,000, according to a Charlotte Observer review in July of publicly available data.

Here is how the salaries of full-time workers break down by the highest average salary-earning departments, keeping in mind that this doesn’t take into account longevity.

▪ The city manager’s office, with 10 employees, averages $207,000. The city manager himself, Marcus Jones, makes $452,000.

▪ The attorney’s office, with 43 employees, averages $132,000.

▪ Strategy and budget office, with 16 employees, averages $115,500.

▪ The information and technology office, with more than 200 employees, averages $110,000
