Man killed in Charlotte in post-Thanksgiving apartment fire caused by smoking, officials say
An apartment fire in Charlotte early Friday left one resident dead.
Smoke was coming from a unit inside the building in the 3600 block of Frontenac Avenue just before 5:30 a.m., Charlotte Fire Department (CFD) said in a news release.
Firefighters at the scene indicated that the blaze had been extinguished upon arrival. An unidentified man with “serious injuries” inside the residence was taken from the unit, CFD said. First responders rendered aid, but the victim later died, according to the news release.
Fire officials explained the fire was contained to one apartment unit, though it is unclear whether smoke detectors were working.
Investigators attributed the cause of the fire to “careless smoking.”
No other injuries were reported.
