Duke Energy has named David Fountain, senior vice president of enterprise legal support, as its new North Carolina president.

Fountain will succeed Paul Newton, who is retiring, on Sept. 1.

He will be responsible for managing state and local regulatory and governmental relations, economic development, community affairs, water strategy, hydroelectric licensing and lake services.

Fountain will be based in Raleigh, as he is now.
