Westbound Independence Boulevard is clear, with all lanes back open, after a wreck near Hawthorne Lane early Thursday, state highway officials said.

The wreck involved a State Highway Patrol trooper whose car hit a retaining wall while he was responding to a high-speed chase, WBTV, the Observer’s media partner, reported.

The chase started near Billy Graham Parkway, and troopers stopped their pursuit at Interstate 77 and LaSalle Street, the station reported.

The trooper was taken to the hospital for evaluation and is expected to be OK, according to WBTV.

Police, meanwhile, responded to an injury wreck shortly after 7 a.m. at Statesville Avenue and northbound Interstate 85.

A wreck also was reported at West Sugar Creek Road and northbound I-85, Exit 41.

Earlier injury wrecks have been cleared at Malibu Drive and the Plaza, and at East Third and South Tryon streets uptown.
