A west Charlotte Waffle House received a “B” grade from the Mecklenburg County Health Department for numerous health violations, including moldy food and lack of handwashing by employees.

▪ Waffle House, 3309 Queen City Dr., received a score of 85.5 during its Jan. 26 inspection.

Health department inspectors cited the restaurant after observing “very little handwashing” by employees, documents show. Inspectors also saw cooks not washing their hands after cracking eggs, and wiping their hands on their faces and cloths.

The restaurant was also dinged after inspectors found a moldy head of lettuce inside a walk-in cooler, according to county documents.

Other violations the restaurant was cited for include:

  • Wet wiping cloths not in sanitizer buckets

  • Large amounts of rust buildup on the inside of a cabinet where food is stored

  • Tomatoes stored above required temperatures

This is the restaurant’s second consecutive “B” grade.

According to state law, permits are immediately revoked if a restaurant receives a score of less than 70 percent.

The Charlotte Observer contacted the restaurant for comment regarding its score prior to publication.
