Locust Police Chief Frank Hartsell said Saturday the victim of what investigators are treating as a homicide in Cabarrus County is a 40-year-old woman, but declined to give her identity.
The woman was found Friday at about 7 p.m. in woods on an abandoned farm at 8300 N.C. 200 near County Line Road just inside Cabarrus County near the Stanly-Cabarrus county line. The town of Locust straddles the border of both counties.
Initially, Locust police had been called in on a report of an assault, but when they arrived they found the woman had died.
Hartsell said he’s withholding the woman’s name until her relatives are notified. He said the cause of death hasn’t been determined but his investigators are treating the case as a homicide.

The body was found at the end of an overgrown driveway near a barn. Hartsell’s investigators worked through the night following leads, but by Saturday morning no arrests had been made.
The SBI and Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office are assisting in the investigation.
