Beginning Monday, part of a popular walking and biking trail in Charlotte’s South End neighborhood will close temporarily because of nearby construction, Charlotte Area Transit System officials said.

Most of the Rail Trail section between Tremont Avenue and Remount Road is scheduled to reopen on Thursday, July 18, according to a CATS news release this week .

A small section fronting a development on Hawkins Street is expected to remain closed through the summer, CATS officials said.

Signs will steer walkers and bicyclists away from the construction and back to an open part of the trail.

A private developer is adding ballast curb, fencing, landscaping, lighting and bike racks during the closure, according to CATS.
