An 80-year-old man died and a child was shot multiple times and hospitalized when gunfire erupted in a home in Salisbury on Saturday morning, police said.

On Monday, the child remained in critical condition in the intensive care unit of a local hospital, police Major Justin Crews said in a news release.

Crews identified the man who died as Salisbury resident Charles William.

Officers found William after responding to a call of shots fired about 5:30 a.m. in a home at 128 Rowan Mill Road, Crews said. Officers tried to save William, but he was soon pronounced dead.

Police learned the child was taken to Novant Health Rowan Medical Center with life-threatening gunshot wounds and then transferred to another hospital.

The shooting wasn’t random, “and no direct threat to the broader community has been identified,” Crews said. “The investigation is ongoing, and no suspects have been arrested.”

Police urged anyone with information about the shooting to contact Lt. Brandon Casper at 704-638-5333, 704-638-5211 or via email at investigations@salisburync.gov.
