Former Charlotte Country Day School administrator arrested on secret peeping charges
Police arrested a longtime administrator at Charlotte Country Day School on multiple secret peeping felony charges Friday night.
Scott Waybright, 58, was charged with five counts each of possessing a photographic image obtained in violation of the peeping statute and secretly using a photographic imaging device to view another’s body or undergarments, according to a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department news release.
Police released no details about victims in the case and their ages, and where police believe incidents involved in the charges occurred.
Waybright was fired as assistant head of school for academics on Dec. 2 “following an investigation,” Interim Head of School David Mancos wrote in a message to Charlotte Country Day School families late Friday. The Charlotte Observer obtained a copy of the message.
Charlotte Country Day officials also barred Waybright from their campuses, Mancos said.
Charlotte Country Day is one of Charlotte’s most prominent private schools.
“The school is cooperating fully with law enforcement,” Mancos said in his message, adding that he could not comment about details of the school and police investigations.
Waybright was charged around 6 p.m. Friday and later released, jail records show. Police said they charged Waybright after he turned himself in at police headquarters.
Police said they’d investigated the case since school officials notified them about Waybright on Nov. 29.
Waybright didn’t immediately return a voicemail message from the Observer.
Second arrest at the school since November
Mancos said Waybright’s case is “in no way related” to the Nov. 13 arrest of Matthew Philip Elliott, 39, a former cross country coach and substitute teacher at the school.
Police charged Elliott with two felony counts of indecent liberties with a student.
A CMPD news release at the time said a former student went to the police on Nov. 8 alleging Elliott flirted with her and “made numerous advances” while she was a student at the school, the Observer previously reported. The former student told police she and Elliott had been in an inappropriate relationship.
Mancos also issued a message after Elliott’s arrest that said: “We have not received other reports of misconduct about Mr. Elliott from other alums or current students.”
Court records in the case said: “The school also confirmed that it was reported to them in 2023 that the suspect was having an inappropriate relationship with a different student.” School officials have declined to comment further.
“This news is difficult”
Waybright worked at the Charlotte Country Day middle school since 1995, Mancos said in his message. “Since 2003, his roles at the school have been in school administration, primarily focused on curriculum and faculty professional development and accreditation,” according to Mancos’ message.
“I understand that this news is difficult, especially on the heels of other allegations regarding an employee’s misconduct,” Mancos wrote to families. “As before, we have and will continue to take swift and decisive action needed to address employee misconduct.”
Police urged anyone with information about Waybright’s case to call CMPD Detective Heather Wyatt at 704-432-1723 or the Crime Stoppers anonymous tips line at 704-334-1600.
