An FBI spokeswoman confirmed the agency is “engaged in investigative activity” in Belmont on Saturday, but wouldn’t say where or what agents were investigating.
“Everything is sealed until the first court appearance on Monday,” was all the FBI’s Shelley Lynch would say. She said that appearance would take place at the federal courthouse in Charlotte.
At about 3:30 p.m., WBTV, the Observer’s news partner, tweeted that FBI agents were inside Capones Parlor & Tattoo Crew at 6412 W. Wilkinson Blvd. The station also tweeted later that agents from the FBI Evidence Response Team were searching a Mount Holly house and taking photos of cars outside.
Interim Belmont Police Chief Basil Marett stated there was an FBI operation going on in Belmont, but referred all questions to Lynch.
