Charlotte firefighters battled a two-alarm fire at a building in the 1700 block of Tar Heel Road in northwest Charlotte Tuesday morning, the fire department said.

A fire crew responded to the fire after the Charlotte Fire Department said it received reports about a tanker trailer fire inside a warehouse, a press release said.

“Our firefighters’ quick response and coordination ensured the fire was contained rapidly, and extensive monitoring confirmed there were no public health risks,” said Fire Chief Reginald Johnson.

The department said that the fire appeared through the roof when firefighters arrived. About a half hour after they arrived, a second alarm was sounded, the department said.

Although it was initially reported evacuations were ordered in the area due to concerns of hazardous chemicals in the building, the department clarified later that was not the case. No firefighters or civilians were injured, the department’s press release said.

“Charlotte Fire conducted thorough air and water quality monitoring out of an abundance of caution,” the press release said. “All monitoring results were negative, confirming no danger to the public from smoke or runoff.”

The fire was caused by the “improper thawing” of a chemical, the department said. The fire caused an estimated $425,000 in damage.

The department said it notified Mecklenburg County environmental officials to assist in its investigation.
