A 7-year-old Kannapolis girl was fatally shot by her sibling who picked up an unsecured gun Thursday morning in what police called an accident. The gun belonged to their mother’s boyfriend.

Timothy W. Burris, 33, was charged with one count of felony child abuse, storing a firearm in a manner accessible to a minor, and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Police found the girl with a gunshot wound when they were called to the home in the 490 block of Cabarrus Arms Drive at about 7:30 a.m., according to a city of Kannapolis news release.

The girl died at the scene, police said.

Police didn’t release the names of the girl, her sibling, or their mother.

Burris was taken to the Cabarrus County Magistrates office and given a $25,000 secured bond, a Kannapolis city press release said. He is scheduled to appear in court on Friday.
