A Charlotte airport worker was killed Monday morning after being hit by an American Airlines ramp vehicle, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department and CLT.

Emergency and medical crews responded to a single-vehicle accident at Charlotte Douglas International Airport around 9:30 a.m. CMPD was dispatched to a call about an employee struck by a vehicle on the tarmac.

First responders pronounced the employee dead at the scene.

“Our deepest condolences go out to the employee’s family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time,” Charlotte Douglas said in statement.

CMPD is investigating the crash. Police withheld the name of the man killed from a public police report, which said he was 66. The vehicle involved was an American Airlines tug, the report said.

Airport chaplains were available, the airport said.

Observer staff writer Jeff A. Chamer contributed.
