Traffic near Charlotte Douglas International Airport was significantly backed up both on I-485 and Billy Graham Parkway for several hours Tuesday morning.

Access to southbound Billy Graham Parkway was blocked after a traffic accident at Josh Birmingham Parkway. It has since reopened, but delays remained at 9:30 a.m. A major accident at I-485 and Dixie River Road near the airport in west Charlotte also tied up the interstate.

Ballantyne was also a mess: A series of traffic light problems in Ballantyne made the commute more difficult Tuesday.

Traffic control malfunctions were reported just after 8 a.m. on Johnston Road at Interstate 485, Ballantyne Commons Parkway and Brixham Hill Drive. The stoplights were out around most of Ballantyne Corporate Park. They were restored at 9:30 a.m.

Earlier, a wreck on I-77 North tied up traffic near the state line for nearly an hour Tuesday morning. The accident was reported just before 7 a.m. a mile south of Carowinds Boulevard (Exit 90) in South Carolina. No injuries were reported. The road was mostly back to normal as of 8 a.m.

Otherwise, Charlotte’s main commuter routes had mostly decongested by 9:30 a.m. Tuesday.
