Newcomers’ neighborhood guide: What’s amazing in Charlotte and the region

I relocated to Charlotte in the summer of 2022 after accepting a job offer with The Charlotte Observer.

Similarly, many people make the Queen City their home because of a new career or transfer, educational pursuit, the weather, or to be closer to family. The combined metro area including Charlotte, Concord and Gastonia has a population of 2.8 million, and it is among the fastest growing regions nationally.

With my New York City roots, uptown had a familiar feel with looming skyscrapers and narrow city streets bustling with energy and traffic. It helped me fall for Charlotte.

But the first thing I needed was information about the city’s neighborhoods — so I could figure out where I wanted to live. How many are there? Where are they located in proximity to uptown, Charlotte’s center? What amenities do they have? How much are the rents? Where are the best restaurants, both cheap and spiffy? Where’s the shopping and parks, and who are the local officials?

To that end we are launching a Charlotte neighborhood guide especially for newcomers that explores all the “need to know” facts about Charlotte’s amazing communities. Each story will showcase a different community, from Arboretum to uptown to University City, and all in between and beyond.

Building on our guide, we have published content geared to specific topics. Some include leads on the best hiking trails, places to do yoga, where to find the best coffee haunts, walking tours, things for families with young children to do. Others will have a more service orientation, such as a DMV cheat sheet, where to register to vote and information on local government.

Plus we’ll sprinkle in hidden gems unique to Charlotte that can help newcomers learn the region faster and gain something very important: community.

So buckle up and be on the lookout for these guides posting a few times a week.
